WaPo and "liberal hindsight bias"

Tue Oct 03, 2006 at 08:19:04 AM PDT

A recent article in the Washington Post attempts to deflect the damage of the NIE leak by suggesting that liberals who now say "I told you so" are suffering from a "hindsight bias" in which they mistakenly think they felt this way all along.

Antiwar liberals last week got to savor the four most satisfying words in the English language: "I told you so." [...]  Yes, they told themselves, we saw this disaster coming. [...] Only ... that isn't quite true.

The article accomplishes two things:

  1. Deflects attention from the primary controversy surrounding the NIE.
  2. Uses a straw man attack to paint all liberals as biased.

Let's avoid the generic "attacks on 9/11" phrase

Mon Sep 11, 2006 at 08:40:41 AM PDT

Let's take this anniversary to remind ourselves that it was Al-Qaeda who attacked the US five years ago.  In the first few days after the attack, it made sense to refer to the attackers as "the terrorists", because we didn't know for sure who was to blame.

But there is no need to continue using those vague terms anymore.  Terms like "the events of September 11" cloud the truth of that day and play directly into the hands of Bush and Rove, who want us to connect their wars with 9-11.
